Do you need that ‘that’?

I’ve been doing lots of editing today and I’m amazed at how many ‘thats’ I deleted without affecting the meaning.

Here are some examples where getting rid of ‘that’ improves the flow.

“The Government believes that Universal Credit will make it easier for people to move into work.”

“Please let us know if there is any information that you feel we should take into account.”

“He was on holiday at the time that the decision was made.”

Read your sentence out loud and if it makes sense without ‘that’, get rid of it.
