GLAXOSMITHKLINE ONE-TO-ONE COACHING CASE STUDY

 

Richard, a sales manager in the pharmaceuticals division, approached me to help him develop his personal communication skills. He had worked for the company for a long time and had slipped into a polite ‘British style’ of presenting that had always served him well. However the US influence on the company was changing the personality of the organisation and Richard felt he needed to developer a ‘slicker’, more persuasive style.

 

At first, he tried too hard to be upbeat and positive and this resulted in him coming over as overwhelming and insincere.

 

We used a number of relaxation exercises and engagement techniques (such as eye contact, pause and vocal seduction) to soften his approach. We also watched video footage of Richard presenting and compared it to expert speakers (such as Bill Clinton) so he could see his strengths and weaknesses.

 

Richard was a fast learner and was soon able to blend his natural presentation style with the persuasive techniques his US bosses were expecting.
